One of the most meaningful parts of my professional journey has been working in case management with returning citizens. In this role, I worked with individuals transitioning back into their communities following incarceration and helped them navigate barriers related to employment, housing, identification, benefits, community resources, and other reentry needs.
This work taught me an important lesson that continues to shape the way I approach people today: a person's past is part of their story, but it does not have to determine how their story ends.
People deserve opportunities to grow, make different choices, rediscover who they are, and build lives they can be proud of. Sometimes they simply need someone willing to meet them where they are while helping them figure out where they want to go next.
